Runnin' Riot Across the USA

Live: Runnin' Riot Across the USA is a pleasant look at a band at the peak of their comeback tour, playing energetic tunes for a buzzing audience. Half of the material is clear and nearly perfectly mixed in a club in San Francisco, while the other half of the record was sort of blah, coming from the legendary CBGB in New York City. Cock Sparrer still puts together a surprisingly good show, and their frontman, Colin McFaull, can still sing with sizzle and flair. The brute punk of the band is easily found in the group's aura both on-stage and in their earlier records. This live compilation features two of their smash hits during their prime, "Running Riot" and "Chip on Your Shoulder." The album does include flashes of thunder and a feverish attitude that's compelling enough to enlighten and turn on their hardcore fans.

Tracks....

1. Riot Squad
2. Watch Your Back
3. Working
4. Teenage Heart
5. Argy Bargy
6. Runaway Johnny
7. Take 'Em All

Two Monkeys

Originally released in Germany in 1997, Two Monkeys really was one of Cock Sparrer's best-written albums, marred by some of their worst ever production. It's hard to say what went wrong, but the fact is, songs like "Battersea Bardot," "East End Girl," and "Before the Flame Dies" deserved far more than the weedy sound and tinny blare with which they were ultimately released. Pick up the original as a collector's item, but save your ears for the 2009 Captain Oi! reissue, which remixes the original master tapes and reveals the album for the all-round masterpiece it ought to have been. Plus, four bonus tracks from the band's San Francisco show in 2000 capture Cock Sparrer in equally seething form.

Here We Stand

The first brand new Cock Sparrer album since 1997’s “Two Monkeys” and it is absolutely brilliant. In fact we’d go as far to say that it is even better then the seminal “Shock Troops” and that’s not something we thought we’d ever say about any album. Great lyrics, great TUNES and a great production by the band, Pat Collier (ex-Vibrator and knob twiddler extraordinaire) and Rancid’s Lars Frederiksen. If you don’t like this then you must be dead from the ankle upwards.

Bloody Minded - The best of

Bloody Minded: The Best of Cock Sparrer includes most of the band's finest numbers, but half the record is made up of more recently recorded live versions of their old hits rather than the original singles. Cock Sparrer sound exactly the same as they always have, and "Take 'Em All," their anti-record-company rant, and "Where Are They Now?," one of their typically disillusioned working-class tunes, hold up fine. So does their classic "Running Riot," with its memorable chorus, "I can't stand the peace and quiet/All I want is a running riot." "Sunday Stripper" is one of the greatest striptease tunes ever written, and while this version is excellent, the original recording is perfect. The new stuff is mighty catchy too, though it's amazing that these middle age men are still writing songs about beating up some poor fool in a pub, as they have with "A.U." Younger bands that imitate this music usually sound awful, especially American kids trying to sing with Cockney accents. So check out the real deal here. Unless you're lucky enough to find a copy of Cock Sparrer Live and Loud, this best-of record will do you just fine

Live And Loud!!

Alive and Loud is essentially a straightforward reissue of the 1987 Live and Loud album, less the Business' contributions to the show, but with the addition of one cut omitted from the original, the closing "Chip on My Shoulder." As such, it stands as a fair representation of Cock Sparrer circa 1987, a high energy rampage through the band's decade-old career that blisters with both wit and fire. "We Love You," their debut single, and a cover of the Clash's "White Riot" might stand as the most obvious points of entry for the neophyte, but it's the band's own originals that stand out the furthest, with the once-controversial "England Belongs to Me" an especially breathtaking moment. The sound quality is not as good as it could be, and there's more audience noise than the casual listener might be comfortable with. But crank it up as loud as you can and, for as long as it lasts, you could actually be in the same room as the band. And that's an experience everybody should share
